Alaska PTA Legislative Fly In, March 4 & 5, 2008

February 4, 2008

Dear Local Unit Leaders and Members,

On behalf of Alaska PTA Board of Managers, I would like to thank you for taking the time to look over our priorities and concerns.  As you may well know, our membership is over 10,000 strong and we have 136 Local PTA Units that reach all over our great state.   Each year, our membership comes together to vote on what our Legislative Priorities will be.  If you did not participate this year in this event, I strongly urge you to do so next year.  You can stay informed by going to our web site www.alaskapta.org and clicking on the Advocacy bar under Where We Stand. We have our priorities for this year and the talking points that go with them for you to download or view.  We will continue to update and post on our web site the Fly-In agenda as it is developed further.

We thank each of you for your countless hours of volunteerism that directly supports and enriches all of our Alaska children and their families.  We feel confident that together we can move forward to improve our educational system that will allow us to prepare our children to be great leaders, capable of making wise decisions in a global economy.

We hope that many of you will budget this expenditure and join us in Juneau, which will be March 4th and 5th, 2008.  To purchase a reduced airfare ticket go to alaskaair.com and enter the single-use e-Certificate Code into the e-Certificate Code box.

We will be presenting our priorities at that time to many of the Legislators. Our power is directly increased by how many participate.  If you have never participated before do not let that hold you back.

Together we can strengthen and improve the educational programs for all Alaskan children.

Sincerely,

Mary Meacham

Alaska PTA
2005-2006 Legislative Priorities

  • Alaska PTA strongly supports the reconstitution of the Alaska Public School Land Trust. In addition, Alaska PTA seeks a delegate seat to assist the state in the management of the school Trust Lands.
  • Alaska PTA strongly supports
    • Modifying the foundation formula to provide equitable educational programs statewide without reducing funding to any school district:
    • Biennial education funding to allow continuity of programs; and
    • Increasing funding to offset escalation of fixed cost to at least maintain existing programs.
  • Alaska PTA advocates for the creation of legislation to provide fiscal incentives to schools that increase daily physical activity and provide healthy food choices.
  • Alaska PTA supports state funding in the form of grants for all school districts to establish affordable after school programs with a physical activity component available to all students k-12.
  • Alaska PTA believes the academic achievement gap will only be eliminated by addressing increased performance by all students.  Alaska PTA will facilitate public dialog to assess and address this gap for culturally diverse, economically disadvantaged and special needs students.  Public dialog will result in a report with recommendations to local communities, educational partners, and the legislature.

Approved October 29, 2005 at the

Alaska PTA Legislative Issues Conference.
